Our Story

About Us

Literacy levels in low-developed contexts can easily stagger you; school-going children often struggle to spell words even at the primary level, not to mention that their first meal of the day before school is almost never always guaranteed. In Uganda specifically, only 23% of students transition to lower secondary school. With such basic learning competences that can be easily mitigated, the burden on the government to ensure well-trained teachers, apt learning, and digital integration remains an uphill task.

Otte A. R. Foundation is a multifaceted Ugandan charity that approaches learning from a holistic approach in some of Uganda’s most remote schools, paying attention to environmental and social-economic factors from which all sustainable learning often finds impact.

Back in the day, the patriarch, Mr. Alex Reuben Otte, dedicated his life to serving many vulnerable learners in his community, often advocating for education, scholarships, and mentorships in his community, at a time when the sector barely got off the ground.

He too, however, saw his interventions as nonexistent without attention to “the context” of education, the world in which learners lived and often returned. He, for example, saw the need for water purification, offering clean drinking water at no charge to the community. He would later kickstart nutrition efforts through nutritional education and supplies to the community.

A teacher at heart, Ottear loved sharing his knowledge and contributed significantly to local development projects, particularly through Calvary Chapel, a non-profit founded by American missionaries.

Inspired by his legacy, the Otte A. R. Foundation aims to carry forward his mission by expanding these efforts across Africa, with a priority on underserved communities. Through direct action and partnerships with like-minded stakeholders and organizations, we are committed to serving vulnerable learners in some of Uganda’s remotest areas.

Better education contexts have always ensured a level playing field for a coming generation, whose thriving is premised on superior learning delivered in a matching context. We want to see to it!
