OTTE A R Foundation is a United States-based nonprofit organization working in partnership with its implementing partner, OTTEAR Foundation Uganda, to expand educational opportunities and transform the lives of children and young people in underserved communities.
Our work in Uganda is centered in Amagoro Village, Tororo District, in Eastern Uganda near the Kenya–Uganda border. Tororo lies within the Bukedi sub-region, where approximately 83% of children experience multidimensional poverty. Most families depend on small-scale farming for their livelihoods, and many parents have had limited access to education themselves, making it difficult for them to provide books, learning materials, technology, and other educational support for their children.

Through the United States organization, we build partnerships, mobilize resources, raise awareness, engage donors and volunteers, and connect the community in Uganda with individuals and organizations committed to advancing education and creating lasting change. OTTEAR Foundation Uganda works directly with local children, families, schools, and community leaders to deliver programs that respond to the community’s most pressing needs.

For many children in Amagoro Village, the school day begins and ends with household responsibilities. Children may fetch water, collect firewood, care for siblings, or work in family gardens before and after attending school. Poverty and other social challenges contribute to high school dropout rates, particularly among girls, while academic performance remains low in many schools. Many children who enroll in primary school do not complete their education.

Educational resources are also extremely limited. Many primary schools do not have libraries, and even secondary schools often lack functional library facilities. As a result, children have little access to books outside the classroom, making it difficult to develop strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills. Despite these challenges, the children we serve are eager to learn and have a genuine love for reading and education.
Together, OTTE A R Foundation in the United States and OTTEAR Foundation Uganda work to address these barriers through literacy clubs, guided reading activities, spelling competitions, mentorship programs, educational bursaries, ICT training, and family-engagement initiatives. These programs help children strengthen their literacy and digital skills, build confidence, remain in school, discover their potential, and prepare for opportunities in an increasingly competitive world.

Access to books and technology remains one of our greatest challenges. Our Uganda program currently has only a limited collection of reading materials and five laptops for ICT training. Additional books, computers, educational supplies, funding, and strategic partnerships would allow us to reach more children, strengthen our programs, and build a lasting culture of reading and learning.

For a child with limited access to educational resources, a donated book is more than a book. It is an opportunity to imagine new possibilities, gain knowledge, develop confidence, and believe in a brighter future.
